A small temple was built under the bodhi tree in Bodhgaya.
Sakyamuni Buddha gained enlightenment under the bodhi tree.
After He gained enlightenment, He sat under the bodhi tree for another 7 days to show His gratitude to the tree.
In Chinese there is a saying about gratitude.
【 吃水果，拜树头 】
Direct translation: Eat the fruit(from the tree), bow to the tree.
(meaning paying gratitude to the tree)
We are living on this earth, do we paying gratitude to the earth(nature).
