This is a popular phrase from the Diamond Sutra(金刚经)。
Buddha wanted to tell us that all the phenomena in this world(worldly things)
are not real. 

At night we dream, feel like real. But once we wake up the dream has gone, no more.
Illusion also not real. It is only an imagination.
Bubble will diminish within a second, it is not real too.
Can we catch a shadow? It is also unreal.

This is to make us understand and realize that the worldly things are impermanent and empty(can't appear by one single self, this is call conditional phenomena).

All these phenomena(situation or happening) happen so fast like dew drop, like a flash of lightning.
We slowly think back and we will realize it is absolutely true.

We shall make full use of our life to practice and cultivate something that will benefit us eternally(merits) but not struggle hard just to possess world things which are subject to emptiness
(Money, fame, materials....).

What is real?
The seed we sow will be real(good thoughts, good speech and good actions).
Sow good seed to get good harvest.

The seed of Amituofo recital will enable us to enjoy a peaceful and happy life now. The grand harvest can be enjoy in Blissful Pure Land.

This is a win-win situation investment.
We shall let go(not clinging to) all the attachment of worldly unreal things but make use of these worldly condition and our time to invest in merits cultivation.
