Buddhist Sutras ( Fo Jing )

Sutras (Jing Dian) are Buddha’s teaching.

Sakyamuni Buddha has preached for 49 years in His life. (365 days without a day off!)

In those days, there were no written records of His teaching.

Every day, Buddha will travel by foot with His 1,250 disciples around the places ( in India) to deliver Dhamma Teaching.

The Sutras was compiled by His disciples ~Ananda. ( He is excellent in memory)

The compilation of the Sutras has done in a very careful way.

Ananda will speak again Buddha’s teaching, all 500 Bhikus (Buddha disciples) will have to agree all together after listening to Ananda’s

Sutra Speak (Jiang Jing), if there is one word that has some one not agree then this word will not put in the Sutras. It was a great job done ever.

Buddha told Ananda, in the future,

All the Sutras that He (Ananda) is going to speak again will start with the word of “ Thus I have heard….”

means the Sutra was exactly what Ananda heard from Buddha.

The original scripts was in Sunskrit.

When Buddhism spread to China,

There were Excellent Chinese Monks

who went to India to study about Buddhism and brought back the Sutras to China and has translated the Sutras into Mandarin.

( There is a show ~Journey To The West, that Tang San Zang is one of the great translator of the Sutras. )

We are so lucky that today we can read and can practice Dhamma.

Reading the Sutra is just like Buddha

is speaking to me.

Our wisdom increase, we feel happy and peaceful, this is because we have accepted Buddha’s blessing (read Sutra).

Sutras representing Buddha (He is not here now). So we must treat the Sutras respectfully as we pay homage (respect) to the Buddha.

Venerable Ananda

He is Venerable Ananda, He is Sakyamuni Buddha’s cousin brother different by 20 years of age.

He has retentive ( good) memory.

He has been Buddha’s attendant for 27 years.

During the time the Sutras was compiled, Venerable Ananda has attained enlightenment. So we shouldn’t doubt about the truth of the Sutras. Instead we should recite the Sutras respectfully.
